When I decided that I would like to build a responsive site, I got a bit well…carried away in the site concept! I thought about what type of site might be enjoyable to design and build. I wanted it to be for a business, but nothing too complicated or large-scale, and a bit fun and quirky. I thought it could also involve food, since I’m known to build a creative salad plate here and there and take pictures of it (yes, bit dorky) and thought, hey, maybe I could use those pics! I decided on a boutique catering business.
I made a plan for creating the web design:
- research similar catering sites
- determine a name for the catering company
- create a logo
- determine a color scheme for the site
- build a mockup for desktop browsers considering tabbing
- build mockups for iPad landscape and portrait
- build mockups for iPhone and Android phone landscape and portrait
Tall order! But I was excited, because this site is called the artsycoder after all, and I was looking forward to this creative side of building the responsive site. I love thinking of names and slogans for things, and the prospect of playing around in Photoshop sounded fun.
In addition to the sites I mentioned in my previous article on responsive design, I also took a look at these sites, as well as some accessibility and graphics-related tutorials on teamtreehouse.com, to get myself more revved up to carry out my design:

In the remaining posts in this series, I will explain how I completed each of the steps to create the web design. First up, research and coming up with a name!
